Boating at Thanneermukkom Bund

It’s a large earth embankment / barrier (a mud regulator) built across Vembanad Lake in Kerala, India, between the villages of Thanneermukkom and Vechoor.

  • It was constructed under the Kuttanad Development Scheme, starting ~1974 and has been operational since about 1976. Its purpose is to block saltwater intrusion into the low-lying agricultural lands (especially rice paddies) in Kuttanad.
  • Length is about 1,400 meters, with many shutters (some 31 shutters each side) to control water flow.
